What happens when your child wants emancipation? Emancipation is a legal way for children to be treated as adults before they are 18. Once a child is emancipated, the parents no longer have legal custody or control of the child. Emancipation remains in effect until the court is motioned for a change in the child’s legal status. The child to obtain emancipation must prove to the court he or she is able to support themselves.
